1981 Leyland Mini Moke Californian
ID# 5628

1981 Leyland Moke Californian. 1275cc A+ engine and disc brakes. Full engine rebuild, rust treatment floorpan replacement. full respray, four seat conversion, re-wiring custom dash and suspension overhaul.

The car drives very well; the engine, gear change and steering are all as tight as a drum with everything working as it should. The gear change benefits from an aftermarket KAD quickshift which overcomes the traditional magic wand gear selection approach. The car is finished in gloss black with two rows of new grey vinyl waterproof bench seats taken from a Toyota Coaster bus. The pair of front seats are mounted on runners which allows them to be moved forwards and backwards. The pair of rear seats include integrated inertia reel lap belts. The front inertia reel three-point seat belts are new and mounted to a six-point padded roll cage. The four-seat conversion is fully complianced. A new Momo steering wheel compliments the custom dash which is fitted with the original speedo and new tacho (rev counter), oil pressure coolant temp, voltmeter gauges and a CD, radio (with removable fascia). The dash also contains a handy storage bin. The interior is finished off by waterproof carpet and individual floor mats.

Under the bonnet, the original 1275cc A+ engine was fully rebuilt in 2007. Since then, the engine has only covered 8000kms. The work done included rebore new pistons rings, crank grind, new bearings oil pump fast road camshaft, followers, clutch, high capacity water pump, electronic distributor, new leads, ;carby overhaul, performance air filter and extractors. AC40 muffler (which is a little louder than stock). The gearbox (being an A+ unit with bigger bearings) is more durable than the earlier 4 synchro versions. A replacement full wiring loom was fitted in 2013. I also have a pair of driving lamps included in the sale (although these are not currently fitted).

The front suspension has been converted to adjustable hi-los and new shock absorbers have been fitted all round. The car is lowered a little and tethers have been fitted at the rear to retain everything on full travel. New suspension bump stops, engine mounts and tie rod rubbers have also been fitted. The car has front disc brakes in good condition and the system is dual circuit. The wheels are 5.5& sunraysias fitted with excellent tyres.

I have fitted a fold down sunshade, which helps to keep the heat at bay. It is not the same as the original wet weather hood side screens.

There are some non-original aspects to the repairs that were carried out prior to my ownership. The black paintwork (not an original colour) is patchy in places due to the use of rattle cans but most significant is the floorpan replacement which was carried out using galv sheet so it does not follow the contours of the original panels. I will understand if this lack of originality is an issue, however there is no rust in the car as a result of the extensive bodywork repairs carried out in 2008.
